In the final days of fall camp this August, a high-ranking member of Michigan’s administration couldn’t help but notice the change in mood around the team as a practice wrapped outside Al Glick Fieldhouse. For the first time, maybe ever, he accepted support from a gaggle of people who had been lining up for years to give it to him. He wanted more people to feel like they had a part in this, something others told him needed to happen this year.

He invited members of the Michigan athletic (and administrative) community to watch practice this spring and summer, more than he ever had. Harbaugh was willing to accept more help this year. But this, to an individual, felt different. People around the program had heard this all before, of course. Michigan football was going to tell itself the truth every day, no matter how hard it was to hear, in the weight room, on the practice field and in the meeting room until this unacceptable losing streak in the biggest game of the year ended.

Because in a true team sense, he meant every word of it. He wasn’t literally talking about working until keeling over and croaking on the field in the middle of a battle against Ohio State. The quote, in so many ways, was classic Harbaugh.

The air of change was long underway when Jim Harbaugh walked to a microphone in Chicago this summer and told a ballroom full of reporters that Michigan was going to beat Ohio State this year … or die trying.
